The reality of stress is that we all deal with it everyday whether we’re old or young, lofty thinkers or practical doers. The person you may know who is a practiced meditator or the yogi that radiates peace is going through stress as well, it is inescapable. We have to learn how to deal with these uncomfortable and distracting symptoms.

Yoga and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

Who can benefit from Yoga? Several studies have shown Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can improve their symptoms and quality of sleep. Employees with work related stress can benefit to enhance their levels of calmness, serenity, and happiness. Even children can participate to teach them calmness and work on academic-related stress.

A quick search for the symptoms of stress pulls up the WebMD page on this topic, where the list of possible symptoms includes:

  • Low energy

  • Headaches

  • Upset stomach, including diarrhea, constipation and nausea

  • Aches, pains, and tense muscles

  • Chest pain and rapid heartbeat

  • Insomnia

  • Frequent colds and infections

  • Loss of sexual desire and/or ability

Beyond these physical symptoms, stress can also have a big impact on your emotions and general mood. describes a few of the mental or emotional symptoms of mounting stress:

  • Difficulty concentrating, racing thoughts

  • Trouble learning new information

  • Forgetfulness, disorganization, confusion

  • Difficulty in making decisions

  • Feeling overloaded or overwhelmed

  • Feelings of loneliness or worthlessness

  • Little interest in appearance, punctuality

  • Nervous habits, fidgeting, feet tapping

  • Increased frustration, irritability, edginess

Stress is inevitable in life, this we know. But we should remind ourselves that succumbing to the negative symptoms of stress is not going to help. We have to change our mindset about stress so we can find ways to grow out of the situation instead of getting swallowed whole from it.
